Year One Home Learning Page

We will be regularly updating this page with new ideas for you to do at home. All staff working in Year 1 and across the school would like to say we hope you are all keeping healthy and safe and we look forward to seeing you all again soon. Thank you again for your continued support. You are welcome to print any resources attached if you have access to a printer. Please feel free to have a go at as many activities as possible, photograph and upload your results onto Tapestry if you would like us to see your work!

Please explore the link above to view different Numberblocks episodes. These are a great resource for children to develop their knowledge and understanding of number in a fun way!

Here are this week’s learning tasks. This week is a learning recap week on concepts that sometimes can be tricky! Have a go at following the PowerPoint each day and having a go at the task. You could also practise the concept practically with things around your house instead of completing the worksheets. Feel free to carry on with certain topics to develop more confidence before moving onto the next concept. These are all concepts we have covered before.

Writing Activities WC 13th July

Our new Topic is 'Alternative Fairy Tales'

Task 1 – My Class

Draw a picture of you and all of your friends in your class. Record sentences describing your friends and why you love playing with them. Don't forget to use all the important features in your sentences: capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. You could also read and check your sentences to check that your writing makes sense!

Task 2 – My time in Year 1

Draw pictures and write about your favourite memories during your time in Year 1. This might be our trip, your favourite art work, your favourite PE game or maybe your favourite topic we have learned about. Don't forget to include our important writing features! See the list below for some of the things we have done in Year 1.

Our topics: All about me, Animals, Toys, Birds, Buildings and Alternative Fairytales

Trip to Tullie house to learn about toys from the past

Making pancakes and fruit kebabs

Christmas performance

Fruit and vegetable faces

Using our new laptops

Getting special certificates throughout the year

Task 3 – Next year in Year 2

Draw pictures and write about things you are looking forward to in Year 2. This might be being a buddy, having a new classroom or maybe getting to know your new teacher. Your new teacher will be able to read these to see what you are excited for in Year 2! Try super hard to include your capital letters and full stops and try hard for neat handwriting on the line.

Science    WC 13th July

Some animals hibernate. This is a deep sleep, where the animal’s heart rate decreases and they survive on fat reserves to provide them with energy for basic life processes. It is a way of surviving through winter when food is scarce and temperatures are harsh. Can you research and find three animals that hibernate? Why do they hibernate? Can you create a fact-file poster with these three animals on?

For fun watch -

Addition Learning Tasks:

D&T - Cooking

Follow the link below and click on week 9 / KS1 / Food Waste

Follow the activity and have a go at making the recipe with an adult!

Draw your very own fairytale castle. This can be as imaginative as you like and could be made out of anything! You could add fairytale characters to your castle too. Label your castle so your teacher can see all of your super ideas!

Our Year 1 Handwriting video will be uploaded on Tapestry every week. Please see your child's Tapestry journal to access this activity.

There is now free access to Letter Join - the handwriting scheme we use in school.

The Letter Join website shows how letters should be formed and joined correctly with videos and printable worksheets. There are also other spelling and grammar activities on there too which I have always found useful for short revision activities.

The link below shows you a guide of how to log in on either a laptop or computer:

The username is: king

Password: moor

If you have any questions about this, or if any links/passwords don't work, please let us know on Tapastry.

Try your best to do neat handwriting in all of your home learning tasks. Think about what we learn in our handwriting sessions in school. Don't forget to think about if your letter is tall or small!

Reading and Phonics

Parents can now create a free account to access Oxford Owl. It is what we use for our phonics lessons. On here you can access reading books based around phonics and the sounds the children know, (the colour of the books on Oxford Owl don't link with the colour of the book band books your child receives from school, please message your child's teacher on tapestry to find out what level book they should be reading if you are unsure.)

More books are added weekly so you could read these books alongside your child's reading books to keep up their great reading. These books also come with comprehension questions to help with your child's understanding of what they have read.

You need to register as a parent on the website to be able to view the e-books for all phonics levels (this is free to do).
Instructions and relevant links are below:

You can also access Read, Write, Inc resources to support phonics, including speedy reading words. Below is a link for these resources (scroll to the bottom to access the resources)

Children are working on Set 2 and Set 3 sounds in Year 1.

Keep up the great reading and phonics work. Please let your child's teacher know on Tapastry if you need any additional support with this.

Please encourage your child to read every day. This could be reading books from school, your child's library book and any of their story books from home. Please see Phonics Play website for extra decodable reading materials.

Questions to think about when reading:

Can you find the title of the book?

Can you find and read the blurb of the book?

What is the blurb for?

What type of book are you reading?

Is it Fiction or Non Fiction?

What do you think will happen in the book?

Where is the story set?

Who are the characters in your story?

What did you like about this book?

Was there anything you didn't like about the book?
