Maths Resources - WC 18th May
Recap - length and height - WC 18th May
Please explore the link above to view different Numberblocks episodes. These are a great resource for children to develop their knowledge and understanding of number in a fun way!
If your child is finding some of the learning tasks a little tricky, adult support would be very beneficial for your child’s understanding. You could go through the steps at your own pace and work together to repeat small steps to build confidence with this week's learning. If your child is confident with the home learning tasks, you could extend their understanding by using some of the examples below.
- Use knowledge to solve problems independently / with some support
– using ‘Problem Solving Challenges’ PowerPoint attached above
- Ask your child questions about how they have reached an answer
- Ask your child to teach someone else in the house what they have learned
- Ask/test your child on specific mathematical vocabulary linked to this week’s learning
Recap – length and height
Please follow the link above for this week’s maths learning. Please watch a mini lesson video each day and have a go at the suggested activity for that day. Please feel free to follow the PowerPoints for further consolidation with the concept and to challenge learning further with some problem solving. Please message your child’s class teacher on Tapestry if you can’t access the white rose videos. Don’t forget you can pause the learning videos for as long as you need to answer the problems!
Watch lesson 1 learning video – comparing length and height. Have a go at following the video carefully. Today you will be working on comparing different items using the correct vocabulary! After the video, collect 6 items from your home, can you correct their height and length using the correct vocabulary? Have a go at the suggested activity for today.
Watch lesson 2 learning video – measuring length (1)
Have a go at following the video carefully. Today you will be working on measuring different objects! After the video, collect objects from your home, can you order them by their height and length using the correct vocabulary to describe the objects? You could have a go measuring your items. You could measure using play lego/bricks, buttons, pencils, paperclips etc. (try and make sure that the item you use to measure are all the same length to make your measuring accurate!) Have a go at the suggested activity for today.
Watch lesson 3 – measuring length (2)
After the video, you could have a go measuring items from your home if you have a ruler. Don’t worry if you don’t have a ruler, we have done lots of this at school already. You can move straight onto having a go at the suggested activity for today.
Watch lesson 4 – introduce weight and mass
After watching the video, have a go at the suggested activity for today. You could also collect items from your home and compare their weight and mass. You may not have balance scales at home, but you could hold your items and make a careful estimation!
Watch lesson 5 – consolidation
Have a go at the consolidation or problem solving PowerPoints.
Writing Activities WC 18th May
Our Topic is ‘Buildings’
Rewrite the story of the three little pigs. Watch the story following this link:
Rewrite the story using varied sentence starters, descriptive language to describe the different homes the little pigs make and don’t forget capital letters and full stops!
Make a kindness card for someone to make them smile. Make a card with a nice message inside for someone in your family. You could decorate the outside with cheerful pictures and bright colours! Don’t forget to use capital letters when you write names in your card! Post a picture of your kindness card on Tapestry to make your teacher smile.
Can you record and say the letters of the alphabet in order? Challenge yourslef to see how fast you can do this. Are you forming all of your letters correctly? Practise the letters you find difficult. If you manage this you could try practising writing the days of the week and months of the year, spelling them correctly and saying/writing them in the correct order.
Science WC 18th May
Make your own flowering plant! Use any recycling or materials from around the house to create a model of a flowering plant with all of the different parts shown and labelled. Upload the photo to Tapestry.
BIG SCIENCE QUESTION TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR FAMILY – does it matter which way round you plant a seed or a bulb into soil?

Our Year 1 Handwriting video will be uploaded on Tapestry every Monday. Please see your child's Tapestry journal to access this activity.
There is now free access to Letter Join - the handwriting scheme we use in school.
The Letter Join website shows how letters should be formed and joined correctly with videos and printable worksheets. There are also other spelling and grammar activities on there too which I have always found useful for short revision activities.
The link below shows you a guide of how to log in on either a laptop or computer:
The username is: king
If you have any questions about this, or if any links/passwords don't work, please let us know on Tapastry.
Try your best to do neat handwriting in all of your home learning tasks. Think about what we learn in our handwriting sessions in school. Don't forget to think about if your letter is tall or small!
Reading and Phonics
Parents can now create a free account to access Oxford Owl. It is what we use for our phonics lessons. On here you can access reading books based around phonics and the sounds the children know, (the colour of the books on Oxford Owl don't link with the colour of the book band books your child receives from school, please message your child's teacher on tapestry to find out what level book they should be reading if you are unsure.)
More books are added weekly so you could read these books alongside your child's reading books to keep up their great reading. These books also come with comprehension questions to help with your child's understanding of what they have read.
You need to register as a parent on the website to be able to view the e-books for all phonics levels (this is free to do).
Instructions and relevant links are below:

You can also access Read, Write, Inc resources to support phonics, including speedy reading words. Below is a link for these resources (scroll to the bottom to access the resources)
Children are working on Set 2 and Set 3 sounds in Year 1.
Keep up the great reading and phonics work. Please let your child's teacher know on Tapastry if you need any additional support with this.
Please encourage your child to read every day. This could be reading books from school, your child's library book and any of their story books from home. Please see Phonics Play website for extra decodable reading materials.
Questions to think about when reading:
Can you find the title of the book?
Can you find and read the blurb of the book?
What is the blurb for?
What type of book are you reading?
Is it Fiction or Non Fiction?
What do you think will happen in the book?
Where is the story set?
Who are the characters in your story?
What did you like about this book?
Was there anything you didn't like about the book?
